Break-In Damage Lock Repair

The patio slider is sitting crooked on its track.

In plain words

There are really two jobs inside one call. The first is tonight: make the door close and lock so the household can sleep. Where the door and frame are sound that means a new lockset or cylinder; where the jamb has split it means a repair plate over the break or a board across the opening, always arranged so the door still opens from inside without a key. The second job is the permanent repair, often the same visit: a reinforced strike box, long screws into the stud, a strengthened door edge and a deadbolt with a full throw. Both are quoted separately so you decide what happens when.

Sound familiar?

You came home to find the front door standing open. The deadbolt is still thrown, but the strike plate is dangling from one screw and a fist-sized piece of the jamb is lying on the hall floor.

How the visit goes

White door with a lever handle and an empty round bore above it, beside a toolbox and a deadbolt on a towel.

  1. Lock, frame or door: which one failed

Three components can fail in a forced entry and they are repaired differently, so the locksmith sorts them out before quoting. Lock failure is a broken cylinder, bolt or latch and is answered with hardware. Frame failure is a torn strike or split jamb and is answered with a boxed strike, repair plates, long screws and sometimes new wood. Door failure is a crushed edge, a split around the bore or a bent hinge leaf and is answered with edge reinforcement or, when the slab itself is broken, a door installer. Naming which of the three happened, and often all three, shows you what the locksmith completes tonight and what is handed to another trade.

  2. Rekeying what a taken key fits

Every cylinder that a missing key could open is rekeyed or replaced before the locksmith leaves. On a serviceable pin-tumbler cylinder, the plug is slid free with a follower so the springs stay put, the bottom pins are exchanged for a new combination and a fresh key is cut; a cylinder that cannot be rekeyed this way is replaced instead. Front, back, side and garage doors are brought onto one new key where their keyways and systems allow it, and the mailbox and padlocks are handled too. Remotes for a garage opener that left in a stolen car are erased from the opener and a new one programmed. The old key still fits the keyway; it simply turns nothing anymore.

  3. Glass and the reach-in problem

When entry came through glass beside the door, the lock was never the weakness, and the follow-up is about the glass. A tested security-film system, applied with its specified frame attachment, can slow an arm from passing through the sidelight, or the pane is replaced with laminated glass by a glazier. Where the layout allows, the deadbolt is repositioned beyond arm's reach of the glass. A thumb-turn stays on the inside, because it lets everyone leave without hunting for a key, and a keyed inside cylinder trades one risk for a worse one if there is ever a fire. The result keeps the intruder out and the way out clear.

What affects the quote

  1. Strike and hinge reinforcement

A security strike box, hinge reinforcement plates and three-inch screws on both sides of the door are listed as their own items, so you can see what strengthens the frame beyond replacing what broke.

  2. Door edge reinforcement

A wrap-around edge reinforcer is added when the wood around the bore is crushed or split. It is a separate part, chosen to suit the door thickness and the hardware going into it.

  3. Door and frame material

A wood jamb over a stud takes standard reinforcement. Steel frames, jambs on masonry, fibreglass doors and aluminum storefront stiles each need their own fasteners and methods, which changes both labour and parts.

What to have ready

  • Which door or opening was forced, and does it still close at all?
  • Is there glass beside the door or in it?
  • Have you photographed the damage as you found it?

Break-In Damage Lock Repair: questions

Questions
Is the lock that was forced still usable?

Sometimes, and the locksmith tests it honestly. A deadbolt that stayed thrown while the frame gave way may be undamaged, though a kick can bend the bolt where it crossed the gap or crack the housing. A cylinder that was twisted, drilled or punched is finished. Reused hardware must operate as smoothly as new with the door open and closed; if it hesitates, it is replaced, because a lock that took a blow tends to fail at the worst moment.

The intruder found our spare keys. What should be rekeyed?

Everything those keys fit. That usually means the front, back and side doors, the garage man-door, the mailbox and any padlocks, and in a rental the suite door with the landlord's involvement. Rekeying changes a serviceable cylinder to answer to a new key, and a cylinder that cannot be rekeyed is replaced instead. Doing every affected opening in one visit, keyed alike where the cylinders are compatible, means no forgotten door still answers to the stolen ring.

What should I have ready when I call about a break-in?

Whether the police have been called and any occurrence number; whether everyone is safe and the property is empty of intruders; which opening was forced and whether it closes at all; whether the damage is to the lock, the frame, the door or the glass; whether keys, remotes or codes were taken; whether you own, rent or manage the property; and whether there is glass beside the door. Photos on your phone help the locksmith bring the right hardware.
