Smart Lock Installation

You have just taken possession of the house and the previous owners handed over a keypad deadbolt with a code nobody wrote down and an app account you cannot get into.

In plain words

A smart lock fitted by a locksmith keeps a way in that works when the battery or network fails, a mechanical key on many models or an external battery contact on key-free ones. Most keypad deadbolts keep a conventional keyway, rekeyed during the visit so a fresh key operates it and the old one retires. Some models instead add small outside terminals where a nine-volt battery can wake a dead lock long enough to enter a code. The technician tests whichever route the model provides, shows the low-battery warning, and explains what the lock does if the internet goes quiet.

Sound familiar?

Half the evenings someone asks whether the back door got locked, and nobody is sure. A lock that relocks on its own, shows its state in an app and reports when it was last opened would settle the question.

How the visit goes

  1. Measuring the door and its holes

Smart locks are built around the standard residential preparation, so the locksmith measures before choosing. Door thickness is usually between 35 and 45 millimetres; thicker doors need an extension kit and very thin ones may need a different model. The large cross bore for the cylinder, the smaller edge bore for the bolt and the backset from the door edge to the centre of the hole are each checked against the new lock's range. A lever set also needs the handing confirmed. Steel and fibreglass doors, doors with a mortise pocket from an older lock, and doors with glass close to the handle each change what will fit and how it is mounted.

  2. Rekeying the override so the old key retires

Most keypad deadbolts keep a small conventional backup cylinder, and leaving it on the old key would undo half the point of the upgrade. The locksmith removes it, slides the plug out with a follower, repins it to a fresh combination, then cuts and tests new keys. Where the household wants one key for everything and the cylinders share a compatible keyway, the back and side doors are rekeyed to the same combination so a single key runs the override and the mechanical locks alike. Some makers reset the cylinder with a tool and the new key rather than by repinning; the method changes, the outcome is the same. The old key no longer opens any cylinder that was rekeyed.

  3. Codes you can give and take back

The lock now belongs to your account, and the day-to-day control is yours. Adding a code for a new cleaner, setting a weekend window for a visiting relative or removing the dog walker who moved away is done from the app or the keypad in moments, without a locksmith and without cutting anything. A short list of who holds which code, kept somewhere private, is worth writing on day one so the door's access stays as tidy as it is today. Codes should be unique per person and never shared aloud on the step; where the lock offers one-time or scheduled codes, use them for trades and deliveries and let them expire.

What affects the quote

  1. Removing an old mortise or non-standard lock

Older doors sometimes carry a mortise case or a lock with an unusual footprint. Filling the pocket, plugging holes and re-drilling to the standard preparation is careful joinery, and it is quoted as preparation.

  2. Supplying the lock yourself

If you have already bought a lock, the quote covers fitting and setup only, with a note on whether the chosen model suits your door; if the locksmith supplies it, the hardware is listed alongside.

  3. Door thickness and material

Thick doors need an extension kit, very thin or glass-panelled doors need particular models, and steel or fibreglass skins take longer to cut cleanly than wood. Each of these shapes both the parts list and the time.

What to have ready

  • Which other doors should share the same key or the same system?
  • How strong is the Wi-Fi signal when you stand at that door?
  • How many people need their own way in, and does that list change often?

Smart Lock Installation: questions

Questions
Do I need a thumb-turn on the inside, or can the inside be a keypad too?

Keep a thumb-turn, or a lever, on the inside of any door you might leave through. A door people use to exit the home works better opening from inside without a key, a code or special knowledge, which matters most in a hurry or in smoke. Smart deadbolts sold for houses have an interior turn as standard; the electronics sit beside it, not in place of it. Interior keypads belong on cupboards and safes, not on the way out.

Can someone hack a smart lock?

Reputable models encrypt what passes between the lock, the phone and the maker's servers, and the ordinary risks are more mundane: a code shared too widely, a default code never changed, or an account with a weak password. The installation addresses those directly by deleting factory codes, giving each person their own, and setting up your account with a strong password and two-step sign-in where offered. Firmware updates from the app close gaps as they are found, so accept them.

Can a smart lock go on a patio door, a side gate or a multipoint door?

Some can, and the locksmith will say which. Sliding patio doors use a hook or a pin rather than a deadbolt, so they take purpose-made electronic latches rather than a standard smart deadbolt. Multipoint doors, common on newer fibreglass and steel entries, lock at several points with one lever; a growing number of smart handles are built for them, and compatibility with your specific gearbox is checked first. Gates take weather-rated keypad locks designed for outdoor posts.
